How Is Urn Size Calculated?
Cremation urns are measured by their internal capacity in cubic inches.
A commonly used guideline is approximately 1 cubic inch of urn capacity for each pound of a person's body weight before cremation.
For example, a person who weighed approximately 180 pounds before cremation would generally require an urn with at least 180 cubic inches of capacity.
You do not need to know the weight of the ashes. Use the person's approximate weight before cremation in the calculator above.
Because cremated remains can vary in volume, this calculator should be used as a general sizing guide rather than an exact measurement.
What Is a Standard Adult Urn Size?
Many full-size adult cremation urns have a capacity of approximately 200 cubic inches or more.
At StillWood Memorials, our Adult Capacity urns provide 250 cubic inches of interior capacity. This provides additional room beyond the traditional 200-cubic-inch reference point and is designed for the cremated remains of one individual.
For families who need substantially more capacity, our Companion Capacity urns provide 500 cubic inches and are designed to accommodate the cremated remains of two individuals.

Do I Need to Weigh the Ashes?
No. You normally do not need to know the weight of the cremated remains to choose an urn.
Urn capacity is commonly estimated using the person's approximate body weight before cremation.

What If I’m Between Urn Sizes?
If the estimated capacity is close to the maximum capacity of an urn, choosing a larger urn can provide additional room.
